My Nikki and adopted dog, ShortyRead my new book!   ”Hurray, I’m Going Home…Blueprint For Pet Adoption

I adopted a black lab, a “little female” from the humane society about 1 1/2 years ago. When she came to us she was suspicious about her surroundings, of course, but sweet. She was great with our resident golden retriever, but did have issues with other dogs, mostly the big ones.

My hubby and I watched a lot of Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, (I still do). Cesar taught me what to expect from my dog, how to leave her past behind…without making her drag it around with her all the time, and he also taught me what I can expect from my dog.

I took her to dog training classes. But mostly, what helped me was Cesar. She became calmer day by day, and now I can walk her without pulling, without hassle when I go past another dog. And, she comes on recall.

Most of all, after 1 1/2 years, she is becoming so loving with other people. She is such a good dog. I am still working on the “big dog issue”. She still has some problems, but only when a big dog gets in her face. But, there is NO signs of aggression, more fear or aggravation.

Anyways, people, if you have an adopted dog, please have the patience to continue with your teaching, your training, and your expectations. The reward will be fantastic for both of you!!!! And, watch Cesar Millan, he will help you more than anything else!! And also include dog training. Read the rest of this entry »

Dog Adoption

So many times we forget that our dogs are NOT human. Oh sure, we humanize them, but, that is for our own selfish reasons, not theirs. The best we can do for our dogs is to let them be dogs. That is demonstrating true love towards our canine family members.\

Here are a couple of tips for when you adopt your dog.

One concerns how to name your new dog, or better yet, should you keep their names?

The Animal Care and Control in NYC and Marin Humane Society in CA have both started using this music full time in their shelters. A calm dog is a more approachable and happy dog, and more apt to be adopted! (Among so many other benefits, aiding in the healing process, anxiety etc.)

Use Music to calm and soothe your pet when you bring them home for adoption. So many retired people are now getting pets.

Come on you guys, you have the time, many of you the funds, and the heart!! Adopt your pet.

What’s good for canines is also good for guardians!

Buster’s under the bed trembling at the first clap of thunder, Max has chewed the new couch to pieces, and Queenie regularly leaves a large present on the Persian rug. But now, thanks to sound researcher Joshua Leeds and veterinary neurologist Dr. Susan Wagner, help is on hand for anxious dogs and the people who love them.

Through a Dog’s Ear: Using Sound to Improve the Health & Behavior of Your Canine Companion (Sounds True, March 1, 2008, $18.95) is the first book of its kind to take a close-up look at sound and its effect on our loyal friends, shedding new light on the link between modern sensory overload and the uptick of psychological and physiological problems in the canine population. A 45-minute starter CD of music—specifically designed to calm dogs—accompanies the book. Clinical trials of the music conducted in kennels, shelters, clinics, and in homes produced results that were…well, like music to any dog-lover’s ears. Seventy percent of dogs in kennels and 85% in households showed a reduction in stressed-out behavior, including thunderstorm trembling, excitement with visitors, and separation anxiety. http://www.throughadogsear.com/
