As dog owners (and lovers) we often will ask the question, “how do we become our pack leader”.
If our dog is part of the family, is our canine love, how can we also be a pack leader. Instead of thinking of pack leaders as dictators, order givers, the bad guy, think of it instead as being the decision maker. I used to allow my golden to choose which way she wanted to walk. She knew the neighborhood Tim Hortons, she knew the neighbors that had cookies for her, she knew where the park was. And yes, she actually did choose different routes on different days. I made the decision to allow her this choice 🙂 Why not, I don’t want to be a tough guy. But, on the other hand, I also made sure she knew HOW to behave no matter what route we took.
After all, no matter how much we love our dogs, they are NOT smart enough to make decisions. As pack leaders, it is our duty to keep our dogs safe, obedient, and courteous.
Think about this: Our dogs do not care if we wear designer clothes, own a huge house, drive a sports car, or any of these things. They want love, time, walks, play, and snacks, of course.
Just as you need to be the “leader” of your kids (you are older, wiser), so you do for your dog.
Being pack leader does NOT mean dominating, or bullying, yelling or hitting or controlling. It means LEADING.
1 You must remain calm, especially in danger, or when your dog is hurt! You are in control (not controlling, big difference)
2 Because you are the leader, your dog will learn to relax, and follow your direction
Feeding your dog a healthy, delicious food and snacks will also help.
