I remember how I felt when I drove home with my new Golden puppy in the back of my jeep (barfing twice). Wow, this was going to be the beginning of an amazing relationship. She was going to be my “super dog”.

That was my Nikki. And, she is a great dog; she is a certified therapy dog who visits the elderly. However, it was not always a fun road to train my dog. Just hang in there and remember, everyone loves a trained, well mannered dog; your friends and family will welcome this new addition to your family.

Rule 1: Teach your precious little puppy to sit! Just think, by sitting, your puppy has already learned many manners. Why? Because sitting dogs cannot jump, run away, nip at your heels, or generally get in trouble.

2 Come! This is so important. You need to really make sure your puppy knows this command, and that he also follows it. Come is not just for convenience, it is for your puppy’s safety!

Walking on a leash, without pulling, this needs no explanation. You can just see in your mind how nice it is to go for long walks with a dog that does not pull.

Take you puppy to a puppy class. Socialization is a must if you want your dog to have a life outside of you.

And remember; make your puppy’s training a family affair.
