Cold Weather Care For Your Four Legged Companion
03 Dec 2007

OK, people. You want your dog to PLAY in the snow, but please, let’s NOT make them SLEEP in the snow!
Here are a few tips to keep your dog good during the winter months.
A lot of the advice for cold weather pet care is just plain common sense
- like making sure your companions have a safe, dry place to stay if they are outdoors
-they need a comfortable place away from drafts if they are inside.
But, it’s important for you to make sure that your pets are safe, comfortable and cozy throughout the long winter months.
- Always make sure your pet has a bowl to drink and eat from that will NOT cause their tongue to be stuck to in the cold.
- Keep your pet’s fur mat free so they can stay warm and comfortable. Even kitties who are extreme about cleaning their own coats need to be brushed regularly and checked for matted fur.
- The air can be dry and irritating in winter – frequent brushings help to distribute the oil in the skin and fur.
- Be sure to totally wipe your dog’s paws, legs and underbelly after a walk in winter weather, especially if you walk near roadways. This is also important for your cats that can go outside whenever they want. Slushy snow from sidewalks and roadways contain a whole lot of toxic chemicals including de-icers, salt, antifreeze, and heavy metals from vehicle exhaust. Your pet will end up “ingesting” these if they are left to clean their own fur or paws – Make absolutely sure YOU clean that toxic stuff off your pets body.
