Off Leash Dog Obedience: How To Take The Training Wheels Off...

My friend Dan wanted to know how to go from using the long line to actually getting his dog to be truly off leash reliable. As he’d already read my material, I think he just needed some assurance he was on the right track. Here’s what I wrote him… I thought you could benefit from it, too!
It boils down to this: Never call the dog if you can’t MAKE the dog come, until the dog is conditioned.
Yes, they know they’re dragging a long line. But after a few weeks, they forget. Just like we know we wear clothing… but after awhile, we just stop paying attention to it.
Change up the length of the long line. Sometimes call her from half length. Sometimes tie it to a tree, put her on a down-stay on one side of the tree and walk to the other– and then call her.

Buy different lengths of long line and work her in a variety of settings. Sometimes you can work her in a small yard, without a long line and just a buckle collar. Every time, what you’re teaching her is that when you call her, if she doesn’t come to you in 1/2 a second, you’re going to go and make her come.
Only correct her if she willfully tries to run away or disobey, once you’re 100% sure she understands the exercise.
The name of the game here is to build a “conditioned response.”
More to come in the next couple of days. Until then, take a look at what we’ve got to offer, below…
