Dogs need exercise even before they need affection. (Cesar Milan’s theory, the Dog Whisperer, and it works!). It keeps them out of trouble, it helps them fit into the family “pack”, and it keeps them healthy. A dog always needs to be a “dog” first.
When I adopted Shorty, my 3 1/2 year old black lab, one of the reasons she adapted so fast to our family was because I made sure I took her for “brisk” walks every day. It helped tire her out and moved her forward. Moving forward, physically, is very important for dogs. And walking is one of the best ways to “move forward”.
So, a brisk walking program can benefit both you and your dog, especially your newly adopted dog.
ps: When you walk, see if you can walk on the grass instead of the cement pathway. Let your dog be a dog and smell the grass and tress and shrubs!
Yours In The Joy Of Our Pets, Ruth
