Dog Training Tip

dog obedience

O NO!  You come home from a difficult day at work, and now what!  The garbage is all over the place.  You want to cry, scream and then kill!  How often has that happened to you?

YOU can fix it you know.  Without too much effort.  And, the payoff is awesome. NO more mess when you come home.

Dog Training TIP

If you find yourself teaching your dog the same thing over and over again.. You are not doing it right!

Scenario!

Fido is sound asleep on the couch when you come home from work. Fido is dreaming about bones and toys, his legs twitching in happiness.

Fido is really tired after going through the garbage earlier that morning. Fido hears his owners coming in the door. Fido gets really excited. Fido has been lonely all day.

Now the owners come in, see this big mess, and whamo, Fido gets into deep trouble. Does Fido know why? NO

TIP: Your dog lives in the moment! If other “moments” have come between the event you are addressing, FIDO WON’T GET IT.

You need to set Fido up so you can catch him in the moment. CONSISTENTLY.

If you do it any other way, you are just confusing your dog. Many people say, sure, but Fido looks guilty when I come home.

Yes, probably because he associates you coming home with him getting into trouble. Dogs do NOT have memories of having done anything right or wrong during the day. Remember: Only In The Moment!

Association is what dogs know:

Association 1 - You come home - Fido gets in trouble-That’s the asscoiation- Hence, Fido looks scared when you come in the door. (Not because he knows he did something bad)

Association 2 - Fido goes through the garbage. Instantly he is disciplined (you set him up and have been hiding around a corner).

-Consistently…That means every time. NOW He associates going through the garbage with getting into trouble.

—–Consistently and instantly -that’s where the association comes in. So, now he stays away.

Will he meet you at the door looking happy thinking “Hey guys, I left the garbage alone today” - NO he won’t.

But, he may start looking happy because he won’t get into trouble for something he doesn’t even remember!

HealthyPetNet- The Best Dog Food For YOUR Companion

Happy Holidays

The season of giving has arrived! Many of us will be spending time with family and friends, and devoting a great deal of time getting ready for those events. Although the holidays are typically marked by a flurry of activity, it’s also good to take time out to reflect on our lives and think about the impact that we have on others.

I’m so thankful to be a part of a company that does so much to promote the welfare and health of companion animals. It’s my great pleasure to work with folks who are as committed to this cause as I am. From order fulfillment to customer service, from marketing to purchasing, from the company principles to the company formulator (me!), we’re all pet people, all the time.
Helping companion animals to lead healthier, longer and happier lives is not just our company commitment … it’s our personal mission.

That’s why we’ve worked very hard to not only provide the best, health-promoting products, we’ve also established a foundation to help improve the lives of abandoned dogs and cats all across the U.S. The Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation is a non-profit organization absolutely committed to supporting a variety of animal rescue groups, all of which are dedicated to helping to rescue neglected and unwanted animals.
