I have a super veterinarian. He is not on the list of “low” charging vets, but, to me he is priceless.

There are two reasons for this. When I had to take my “bear”, my golden retriever in for an operation, no way was she going to leave me and follow the helper into the back room. She sat, and would not budge. The vet’s helper tried pulling and pulling, but to no avail.

At that moment the vet came into the front office. He saw what was happening and he told the helper off. He told her “do not ever, ever pull a dog in this way for any kind of procedure again”

He then took my bear’s leash, stood in front of her, talked sweetly to her for a few moments, and she followed him no problem.

Even after that operation and all the visits afterwards, she never hesitated to go with the vet. She loved him.

And, when it was time for her to go to sleep…which I still cannot talk about, I am crying at the moment, I wanted to call a mobile vet into the house so I would not need to take here in.

When I told this to my vet ”Ruth” he said ” Do you want the last moments of your dog to be with a stranger, or with me, her vet whom she loves and trusts?” And he was right, my bear should be with the vet she loves, not the vet she does not know.

So, I took her in, and as always, she trusted him to do the right thing, and that day he was doing the right thing.

I wanted to wait outside; I am a big chicken when it comes to these issues. My husband used to take care of these matters, but, he has advanced MS, so now it is my duty.

My vet convinced me to stay with her; he said that I would be forever thankful that I did stay with her during that moment. And, he was right.

I was so glad that he did convince me to stay. It was the last and biggest act of love and kindness I could do, and today I am thankful I had the guts to do it. She fell asleep in my arms with never a moment of concern or worry.

So, pick your vet carefully. Watch for how much compassion, love and kindness he has for your pet.
